How to Avoid Scams

Protect yourself from common vehicle scams

Warning Signs to Watch For

Price Too Good to Be True

If a vehicle is priced significantly below market value, be very cautious. Scammers use low prices to attract victims.

Seller Abroad or Unavailable

Be wary of sellers who claim to be overseas, in the military, or cannot meet in person. Always insist on viewing the vehicle.

Upfront Payment Requests

Never send deposits, shipping fees, or any money before viewing the vehicle in person.

Pressure to Act Quickly

Scammers create urgency. "Another buyer is interested" or "price only valid today" are classic pressure tactics.

Incomplete or Suspicious Documents

V5C not in seller's name, reluctance to show documents, or altered paperwork are major red flags.

Common Scam Types

1. Phantom Vehicle Scams

The vehicle doesn't exist or the scammer doesn't own it. They'll use stolen photos and ask for deposits or payment for shipping.

Protection: Always view the vehicle in person before making any payment. Never pay shipping or deposit fees.

2. Clocked Vehicles

The odometer has been altered to show lower mileage than the vehicle has actually covered.

Protection: Run an HPI check to verify mileage history. Check service records and MOT history on gov.uk.

3. Cut and Shut Vehicles

Two damaged vehicles welded together to create one. Extremely dangerous and illegal to sell without disclosure.

Protection: Run an HPI check for write-off history. Have a professional inspection before purchase.

4. Outstanding Finance

The seller doesn't own the vehicle outright - it's still under finance. The finance company could repossess it from you.

Protection: Always run an HPI or finance check before buying any used vehicle.

5. Escrow Service Scams

Scammers create fake "escrow" or "buyer protection" services that steal your payment.

Protection: Mobeo doesn't provide escrow services. Any email claiming to be from "Mobeo Protection" is fraudulent.
