The MAN TGX in the UK

The MAN TGX sits at the premium end of the MAN truck range, competing directly with the Volvo FH, Scania R, and DAF XF for long-haul tractor unit work. It's well respected for cab quality, the excellent D26 engine, and particularly good fuel economy on the Euro 6 models with EfficientCruise predictive cruise control.

TGX Generations

First Generation TGX (2007 to 2020)

Launched as a premium replacement for the TGA. Euro 5 models (2007 to 2013) and Euro 6 models (2013 to 2020). The cab design remained largely unchanged across this period but the engines and emissions systems improved significantly.

New Generation TGX (2020 Onwards)

Complete redesign with much better aerodynamics, fully digital cab, and new engine options including an 18-litre V8 variant (TGX 640). Euro 6d throughout.

Euro 5 vs Euro 6 — Should You Pay the Premium?

Euro 5 TGX (2009 to 2013)

  • Price advantage: £15,000 to £25,000 cheaper than equivalent Euro 6
  • Lower AdBlue running costs (Euro 5 uses less complex SCR)
  • Simpler emissions systems — fewer expensive fault points
  • Risk: Access to Clean Air Zones and future low-emission areas increasingly restricted
  • Price range: £14,000 to £30,000

Euro 6 TGX (2013 to 2020)

  • Better fuel economy — the EfficientCruise system alone is worth 5 to 8% fuel saving
  • Access to all current Clean Air Zones
  • Higher purchase price but lower day-to-day running costs
  • More complex AdBlue/SCR system — more potential fault points
  • Price range: £28,000 to £80,000 depending on year and spec

New Generation TGX (2020 Onwards)

  • Price range: £65,000 to £110,000 for 2021 to 2023 examples
  • Significantly better aerodynamics — up to 8% fuel saving over previous generation
  • Best-in-class digital cab with large touchscreen
  • Best choice for future-proofing but at premium used prices

The D26 Engine

MAN's D26 (12.4 litre, 400 to 560PS) is the standard TGX engine and one of the most reliable truck engines on the market. The D26 is well known among HGV mechanics — many independent workshops have extensive experience with it. It's particularly strong on EGR robustness compared to some competitors.

What to Check

Turbo Compound (if fitted)

Some TGX models have MAN's TipMatic gearbox with Turbo Compound — a power recovery turbine that extracts energy from exhaust gases. This is generally reliable but requires specialist knowledge for maintenance. Verify turbo compound service has been carried out.

AdBlue Dosing System (Euro 6)

Check the dosing injector, pump, and NOx sensor condition. Request any recent fault code history from the vendor.

Cab Quality

MAN GX cabs are well-built but check the bunk area carefully — marks on the headlining often indicate water ingress around the roof hatch or ventilation system. Also check the sleeper cab heating (Webasto or Eberspächer) functions correctly.

Verdict

For operations within or near Clean Air Zones: Euro 6 TGX only. For rural or motorway-only work with a tight budget: a well-maintained Euro 5 TGX can offer good value, but check the used price differential carefully against projected Clean Air Zone fee exposure.
