Review of 2021 Toyota Yaris GR

The 2021 Toyota Yaris GR is the first in-house sports car made by Toyota in nearly two decades. Since his appointment as Toyota's global president in 2009, Akio Toyoda – the grandson of the brand's founder – has been leading a decade-long journey that is finally bearing fruit. His passion and enthusiasm for cars resulted in the creation of the Toyota 86, which was released in 2012 as a result of collaboration between Subaru and Toyota.

The Yaris GR takes this same spirit to a whole new level with its advanced powertrain and performance features. With its turbocharged 1.6L three-cylinder engine, it produces an impressive 268 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, propelling it from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. It also comes equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox and an all-wheel drive system, allowing drivers to take full advantage of its remarkable power and torque output on any surface. The car also boasts 36mm front anti-roll bars that help reduce body roll while cornering at higher speeds, providing drivers with improved handling stability and agility on any terrain or road condition. Furthermore, the Yaris GR also includes dynamic torque vectoring control that helps distribute power to specific wheels based on driving conditions, giving it an extra layer of agility when navigating tight corners or difficult terrain.

Performance

The 2021 Toyota Yaris GR is a performance-oriented hatchback that packs quite a punch in its compact size. The heart of the Yaris GR is a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces up to 200 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft. of torque, making it one of the most powerful cars in its class. For improved response and power delivery, the engine features a single-scroll ball bearing turbocharger with large-diameter exhaust valves and multi-jet oil cooling system. The engine’s lightweight cylinder blocks also feature a two-level water coat structure and reduced back-pressure muffler for optimal performance and weight reduction. Drive is delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, enabling drivers to launch from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.2 seconds. The Yaris GR has been designed with maximum agility in mind, offering advanced suspension tuning, lowered ride height, and wide tires for improved grip on tight corners, while still delivering excellent fuel efficiency thanks to its stop/start technology.

Driving Experience

The 2021 Toyota Yaris GR is the perfect car for those looking to get the most out of their driving experience. Featuring an innovative powertrain, this vehicle combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine with an all-new six-speed manual transmission. This delivers an impressive 156 kW/tonne power-to-weight ratio, putting it in the same league as the Honda Civic Type R and Renault Megane RS. An even sportier drive can be achieved when switching to Track mode which distributes the front and rear torque evenly at 50:50 for superior acceleration from 0-100km/h in only 5.2 seconds. The cabin also features Active Sound Control to reduce any booming inside, taking your driving experience to the next level. Additionally, lightweight materials such as Olefin polymers have been used within the bumpers resulting in a remarkable 38 percent less weight compared to other Yaris models, giving you maximum manoeuvrability on any terrain or track.

The 2021 Toyota Yaris GR is an impressive performance vehicle that packs a punch, offering drivers an exhilarating driving experience. The powertrain of the Yaris GR includes a 1.6-litre Turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that produces 257 hp and 265 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. It also offers three different drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Track. With the Normal mode, the Yaris GR is well-balanced and smooth, while Sport mode provides more sporty dynamics with increased grip and responsiveness. Track mode allows for maximum power output for full track performance.

Interior
